How we cut a branch
When a whole branch comes off, we cut just outside the branch collar, not flush to the trunk. That leaves the tree its own tissue to seal the wound. When we shorten a limb with a reduction cut, we cut back to a lateral at least one-third the diameter of the piece we're removing. A cut made anywhere else on the limb leaves a stub that can't close properly. If a crew's plan includes flush cuts or lopping limbs back to nothing, ask them why.
What pruning and removal cost
Pruning runs $200 to $800 per tree. Removal runs $400 to $1,200 per tree. Where a tree lands in those ranges comes down to its size and what the job includes. We price each tree after looking at it, so the number you get is for your tree and not a guess.
Chipping the brush and grinding the stump are done when they're part of the agreed job. Tell us up front whether you want them, so the quote covers everything you expect.

Taking a tree down in pieces
When a tree can't be felled in one piece, we dismantle it from the top down. A rigging rope-and-pulley system controls each section on the way to the ground, so nothing drops free onto the roof, fence or yard below. It's slower than a straight fell, but the pieces go where we send them.
After the cuts are done
Once the tree is down, we chip the brush. If grinding is in the job, we grind the stump too. If you plan to replant or lay sod over the spot, grinding is the step that makes that possible, so decide on it before we start.
Limestone ground and sinkholes
The Ocala Limestone formation sits near the surface here, and Marion County is sinkhole country. If the ground around a tree settles suddenly, or the settling speeds up, don't wait on it. Have it looked at by a professional promptly, and call us if a tree is involved so we can tell you whether it needs to come down.

Straight Answers to Common Questions
What is the cheapest time of year for tree removal?
Late fall through winter is generally the most affordable period because demand drops after leaf season. Crews can work more efficiently without foliage and scheduling is easier. Prices may still vary with weather and storm damage, so obtaining multiple estimates remains important regardless of season.
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree on my property?
Permit requirements depend on local ordinances, tree size, species, and whether the property is in a protected area. Many municipalities require permits for trees above a certain diameter or in historic districts. Contact the city planning or forestry department before scheduling work to avoid fines or mandatory replacement rules.
What is the 5-15-90 rule for tree felling?
The 5-15-90 rule is a safety guideline used during directional felling. It refers to maintaining a 5-foot escape path at a 90-degree angle from the planned fall line while keeping bystanders at least 1.5 times the tree height away. Professional crews also survey hazards and establish clear drop zones before cutting begins.
